Oil brushes

When using oil paint, it's important to have the right equipment. Brushes should preferably be made from natural hair, as oil is an organic material that binds best to natural animal hair. At Stellings you can find both coarse pig hair brushes, where you can clearly see the brush strokes, or fine sable brushes for detail work.

Oil brushes for beginners and experts

Oil paint is a timeless art form with a rich history that has fascinated artists for centuries. It's a paint that gives you great flexibility, the ability to layer and create more vibrant and compact colors, available in both very light and very dark shades. But you can't create amazing paintings without an oil brush.

A good oil paint brush can make a significant difference to your artwork. It allows you to take advantage of all the best parts of oil paint, so you can create multiple textures, mix colors and get the effects you want. An oil brush will usually consist of bristles or synthetic threads held together by an iron ring. These brushes are stiffer compared to other types of brushes, giving you exquisite control so you can handle the oil paint with ease. Traditionally, either pig or marten hair is used to make oil brushes, but it's also possible to find brushes with other types of animal hair.

At Stellings you can find a wide range of brushes for oil painting. Find them with marten hair or pig hair. We also have oil brushes in all kinds of shapes such as round, flat, slanted and fan-shaped. You can find brushes from recognized brands such as da Vinci and Escoda.

What kind of oil paint brush should I choose?

Pig hair brush

Oil brushes with pig hair are the most commonly used brush in oil painting. The bristles have a strength, stiffness and durability that allows them to apply thick oil paint on rougher canvases. These brushes can hold large amounts of paint for bold and expressive brush strokes. This makes them particularly suitable for the impasto painting technique, where you paint with thick layers of oil paint. Hog hair brushes come in a variety of shapes and sizes, so you can find the one that best suits your needs and preferences.

Horsehair brush

Unlike a pig hair brush, a sable brush is made with soft and fine hairs that are better for precision and small details. It holds paint well so you can get plenty of paint on the brush, which is important when working with oil paint. You also get a controlled application and can accurately blend colors together. With a sable brush, you can create beautiful brush strokes without resistance.

Ultimately, however, you need to choose the brush that best suits the way you paint. Therefore, it's always a good idea to explore our selection of oil brushes to find the one that best suits your techniques and desired results.
