Faber-Castell Graphite Watercolor Tin Set containing 5 water-soluble graphite pencils in hardness grades HB through 8B. The pencil draws like a regular graphite pencil, but the pigment dissolves completely when water is brushed over the line, allowing the subject to be transformed into a soft, watercolor-like gray-scale surface.
The set includes the following hardness levels:
- A water-soluble graphite pencil that draws like a regular pencil but can be smudged and blended with a wet brush to create watercolor-like gray-scale effects
- Shatterproof thanks to the patented SV bonding technique (Sekuralverfahren)
- Ideal for traditional watercolor painting, preparatory studies, and sketches, as well as for use in combination with acrylics, oils, or mixed media
- The wood comes from certified and sustainable forestry
- Environmentally friendly, water-based varnish on the pencil itself

About Faber-Castell
Faber-Castell is the world’s oldest manufacturer of pencils, founded in 1761 in Stein near Nuremberg by the carpenter Kaspar Faber. The company has remained in the family’s ownership for several generations. In the early 1800s, the third-generation owner, Georg Leonhard Faber, established the standard hardness grades still used today and, under the name “A. W. Faber,” launched what is considered the world’s first branded pencil. His son, Lothar von Faber, subsequently expanded the company into the global market, opening branches in New York, London, and Paris, among other cities.
In 1905, the company launched the green Castell 9000 pencil, and the name Faber-Castell came into being when the Faber family joined forces with Count Alexander zu Castell-Rüdenhausen. Today, Faber-Castell grows a large portion of the wood for its pencils in its own certified pine plantations in Brazil and uses exclusively water-based, environmentally friendly varnish in its European production. The “Made in Germany” quality seal has been the foundation of the company’s artistic and design products since its inception.
