Brushes for art

A brush is the artist's primary tool when it comes to painting. It helps you more accurately apply colors, textures and details on a canvas. Brushes also play an important role in controlling the paint and achieving the desired effects. The right brush can therefore have a big impact on your painting, which is why it's also important to know which brushes to use for what. You can find brushes made specifically for oil, acrylic, watercolor and gouache painting, and they also come in different shapes. To give you a good overview, we have created a small guide to which brush shape you should choose:

  • Round brushes are designed to be extremely versatile and are often used to create outlines, sketches and fine details. They have a pointed end and can hold a good amount of paint, allowing for even and controlled strokes.

  • A flat brush has a square and flat tip, making it perfect for broad brush strokes that cover large areas and create sharp edges. It is often used for landscape painting and washes - also known as washes.

  • Filbert or cat's tongue brushes have an oval tip with beautiful rounded ends. They are a combination of round and flat brushes, making them suitable for blending, softening edges and creating round designs.

  • With a fan brush you can easily create texture, blend colors and paint leaves, clouds and hair. The bristles themselves are unique as they spread out like a fan.

  • Detailing brushes Detailing brushes have a thin, pointed tip, making them perfect for intricate works that require a lot of precision. They are most often used to create tiny details, highlights and small lines.

  • A bevel brush is useful for painting precise lines, filling corners and creating details on small canvases. Its angled bristles make it possible to create both thin and wide lines.

At Stellings you can find both single brushes for art or brush setsif you know you need many different kinds of brushes to paint.

Acrylic brushes

When painting with acrylic paints, it's important that you choose a brush with synthetic hairs. This is because acrylic brushes are specifically designed for painting with acrylics, which are water-based and quick-drying, allowing the paint to stick to regular brushes with natural materials. With the right acrylic brush, you can handle acrylic paint effortlessly and create beautiful brush strokes across the canvas. You can see our selection of acrylic paint brushes here.

Watercolor brushes

As a watercolor painter, you will undoubtedly need a brush that can handle the beautiful water-based colors. When working with watercolors, it's crucial that you can control how much water you paint with. A watercolor brush with soft, natural bristles makes it easy to mix colors and create captivating gradations. Oil brushes

A quality oil paint brush can have a significant effect on your artwork. It allows you to use oil paint to its full potential, allowing you to create textures and mix colors as you see fit. An oil brush is usually made up of pig or sable brush hairs that are bound together by a metal ring. It will also tend to be stiffer than other brushes, giving you more precise control.
